ISO 45001 is the new ISO standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S). While ISO 45001 draws on OHSAS 18001 – the former benchmark for OH&S – it is a new and distinct standard, not a revision or update, and is due to be phased in gradually over the next three years. Organizations will, therefore, need to revise their current thinking and work practices in order to maintain organizational compliance.

WHAT ARE THE MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN OHSAS 18001 AND ISO 45001:-

  • While OHSAS 18001 was procedure based, ISO 45001 is process-based.
  • ISO 45001 follows the HLS (High-Level Structure) while it was not the case with OHSAS 18001.
  • ISO 45001 deals with both RISK & OPPORTUNITIES while OHSAS refer to only the RISKS involved.
  • ISO 45001 takes into consideration the view of interested parties while OHSAS 18001 do not.

The Primary focus of ISO 45001 is to identify, eliminate along with continual improvement of potential hazards and risks in the work environment of the organization. The methodology to manage risk is as follows

  • Plan actions – to reduce the risks or eliminate them, we need to plan the actions (What needs to be done, who will do it and when?)
